Baja Sur with abundant sun is a perfect place for solar pool heating.Click here to learn more…..   Getting Your Solar Pool Heating System Ready for Summer   With so many people in Baja California Sur preparing to head north for the summer, it is time to think about getting your pool ready for the months you will be gone.   Most likely you won’t be using your solar pool heater in the summer.  The most important thing you can do to protect your system is to drain and isolate it completely. If your system was professionally installed it probably has isolation and drain valves that allow you to stop the flow of water to and from the solar collectors, as well as draining out the piping. Just closing the 3-way solar bypass valve is not enough since it is possible for pool water to travel up the return line from the collectors when the filter pump is running.   First close your 3 way diverter and disable the solar pool heating system. Use whatever controller runs your solar system for this; or do it by hand if you have a manual type system. If you have a basic GL235 Controller, flip the switch to MANUAL OFF while the pump is running and the diverter valve should automatically close.   If your system has the above mentioned valves, close the two isolation valves and open the drain valves on the collector side of those valves (expect water to flow out). Leave the drain valves open a touch to vent the system; and if the collectors are accessible remove an end cap or two from a row of collectors, which usually only requires a screwdriver or 7/16″ socket to unscrew a hose clamp. This will allow the hot air in the collectors to vent outside instead of into your pump room through the drain valves. It is also a good idea to tie a sock or cloth over the open end to keep any critters out.   Although most commercial grade collectors are designed to withstand extreme heat and pressure, you will extend the life of your collectors by taking these steps.

Solar Clothes Drying – Baja Style

We have been using the Baja sun and breezes to dry our clothes, sheets, and towels for two years now, and we can’t imagine going back to full-time electric dryer use.  Besides our electric bill being reduced, we have come to love the ritual of hanging clothes on the line.  Birds are singing, we are outside and slowing down the pace of life in just one more way.  

Besides the “big wind” days when the lighter clothes whip around the line, most of the time the laundry looks nice hanging all in a row and smells great. We love our stiff towels and after one use they soften up.  We can tell when our college student visits (jeans need to be tight and soft when you are a 19 year old girl) because our electric bill spikes from dryer use.  

There are more than 88 million dryers in the US, according to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers. If all Americans line-dried for just half a year, it would save 3.3% of the country’s total residential output of carbon dioxide, experts say.

“It’s a huge waste of energy to tumble dry your clothes,” said Tom Arnold, chief environmental officer of TerraPass, a San Francisco company that sells carbon offsets, which aim to reduce greenhouse gases to compensate for one’s activities. “It’s one of the simplest things to

do to help with global warming.”

Debido a los requisitos de tener un gran porcentaje de tejado inclinado y colectores solares para ser no visible, there was nowhere to place the amount of collectors needed to heat the pool.

A petición del arquitecto, se generó un plano acotado con nuestro número recomendado de colectores, incluyendo tuberías y espacio de anclaje.
